Craniomandibuläre Dysfunktion (CMD)

Craniomandibular dysfunction, also known as CMD, is a dysfunction of the masticatory system. This system consists of:

the jaw joints
the masticatory muscles
the bite of the upper and lower teeth

Although many people have TMD, it doesn’t necessarily cause pain or other discomfort. This is because the chewing system can adapt to the joints and their position with the help of the masticatory muscles.

Pain occurs when the muscles can no longer fully compensate for a pathological change.

If you’re not familiar with the term CMD , you should know: The C stands for cranio , which in German means „skull. “ Mandibula means „lower jaw,“ and „dysfunction“ stands for malfunction.

Mit diesem Begriff wird eine Funktionsstörung beschrieben, welche das Zusammenspiel von Gelenken, Muskulatur und den Zähnen bezeichnet.

Die Craniomandibuläre Dysfunktion wird auch als CMD bezeichnet. Es handelt sich um eine Funktionsstörung des Kausystems. Dieses System besteht aus:

den Kiefergelenken
der Kaumuskulatur
dem Zusammenbiss der oberen und unteren Zähne

Obwohl viele Menschen eine CMD haben, führt diese nicht zwingend zu Schmerzen oder anderen Beschwerden. Das liegt daran, dass sich das Kausystem mithilfe der Kaumuskulatur an die Gelenke und deren Stellung anpassen kann.

Schmerzen treten auf, wenn die Muskulatur eine krankhafte Veränderung nicht mehr vollständig ausgleichen kann.

Wer das Wort CMD nicht kennt, sollte wissen: Das C steht für Cranio, was im Deutschen den Schädel bezeichnet. Mandibula heißt so viel wie Unterkiefer und Dysfunktion steht für den Begriff Fehlfunktion.
